July 2024 Talk

July Meeting. My Educational Journey - legacy and impact - John Littlewood

Around 40 members attended our July meeting to hear local primary school head John Littlewood talk about his career in teaching and his current work with our own Brockenhurst Primary School. From his childhood experience at a small village school In Lancashire John became an advocate of the small school and the community spirit it evokes.

It was a clear theme in his career. His move south to lead to his appointment at Hordle’s village school, then to Brockenhurst as deputy head and eight years ago his promotion to head teacher. He went on to detail how on the move of the nursery school to the site came about and the unusual situation the school found itself in having commoning rights and how it seized on the opportunity to open a “Forest School” area where pigs are kept. He talked of the proposed Nursery School expansion to take in younger children aged 6 months to 2 years.

With population changes and funding pressures John explained how increasingly schools were coming under pressure to provide unique selling points to attract pupils.

In summary an interesting talk reminding us how far the school has progressed since our children were there.
