Sky Museum Visit led by Richard Burt

On the 24th January 2024 we visited the Sky Museum in Southampton. Situated under the Itchen Bridge it has a collection of Aircraft built in the Southern Counties.

Most famous and prominent is the Spitfire designed by RJ Michell as well as his Schneider Trophy winning Aircraft. The elephant in the room is the Sandringham, a large flying boat, which carried 44 passengers in some comfort. The museum was actually built around this plane. We were given a guided tour around the aircraft and were able to enter the cockpit of the Sandrigham. The museum is full of interesting exhibits. These include an original spacesuit of the type worn on the first visit to the moon, a very smart merlin spitfire engine, a tribute to world war two in lace and some vintage world war one planes. It was an interesting morning of reflection on how far aviation has come in a very short time.
