20th September Wine Tasting (Rob Evison
The White Wine Tasting Challenge Evening
Yet another challenge to see just how good your taste buds are and
how well you can remember tastes and smells (not a test of how well you know your wines!)
Rob will give a short talk about how to taste wines and what to look for. You will then taste six white wines with the labels visible so you’ll know what you’re tasting (you’ll have a tasting sheet to make notes).
Then three of the wines will be brought back one by one and tasted blind. Use your notes to identify the wines and record your choices on a slip of paper (make sure you keep yours well hidden!).
If there’s a draw for the most number of wines correctly identified, we’ll go to a sudden death “drink-off” – successful tasters compete to identify further wines, dropping out if incorrect, until there’s a winner.
The victorious champion will be awarded an appropriate prize to recognise their outstanding achievement.
Please advise if there are any non wine drinkers attending.
As on previous occasions there is no meal at this event, just some bread to cleanse your palate between tasting.

19th October at The Mayflower in Southampton. A Matinee Performance of Warhorse led by Rob Morgan
This National Theatre’s production of War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical experience from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, this drama is filled with stirring music and songs. Astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.
In the story, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry at the outbreak of World War One and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in No Man’s Land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find Joey and bring him home.
Reservations for lunch will be made at the Papillion restaurant opposite the theatre prior to the show. Theatre ticket cost is £64 per person. Seats are located towards the back of the circle with a full view of the stage. Travel is by car pool or by train, the station is 200 metres from the theatre.
