Wharie Winery Visit led by Graham Otter

On 11th June 2025 twentyone of us, members and partners met at the New Sway Winery Wharie. This is a new Venture by Guillaume Lagger. and his partner. They have planted 2 hectares of vines and 7 acres of orchards. The vines take 5 years to become productive the orhards longer. Meanwhile Guillaume has gathered the machinery, barrels and storage and is using it to produce 4 different wines from local grapes and two ciders from local and somerset orchards. He has won awards and this year he will be using his own grapes. While waiting for the vines to mature he has done much on the marketing and branding of Wharie and is even selling his wines to the Pig. Our visit was very informative we had the machinery explained to us, how the barrels are prepared and how the wines are blended. We then toured the farm and finished with a tasting of the 4 wines and 2 ciders with some wonderful cheeses Guillaume buys from Southbourne. We then went on to The Hare and Hounds for lunch and had the opportunity to discuss what we had experienced. The Wharie is a local new business with extremely competent owners. It is sure to be a success.
