October 2025 Talk
Our October meeting heard an interesting talk “A Naval architect and his Aircraft Carriers”: by Nick Pattison. Nick, a well-known villager, has worked with major defence ship builders Vosper Thorneycroft and BAE and the Navy for many years and took us through some of interesting projects which he had led and worked on. These included “specials” such as “ RV Triton” a former prototype trimaran warship demonstrator built to prove the viability of the hull-form and as a trials platform for other innovations. Nick also worked as a project manager on the UK’s most powerful warships - aircraft carriers “Queen Elizabeth” and “The Prince of Wales”. He was able to give us an insight to how these enormous vessels are configured and how they were each built in sections in different UK shipyards and then towed to Rosyth for assembly. A fascinatig talk showing the difficulties of designing and building a warship over 25 years. and still trying to keep it relevant.
